Easiest way to start gardening with students!

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Ok so this is step 1. This is your easy peasy intro to gardening.

Ask students to bring in a potato. Some will, some won't.

If you have 10 potatoes, that's great!

Watch them germinate and put them in a big tub full of soil.

In June, go dig for potatoes!

BC teachers - here is a program that supplies seeds, tubs and soil for free - https://www.bcaitc.ca/spuds-tubs

This is their timeline for the potatoes:

Early March: plant your seed potatoes in the tub

April: move your plants outside during the day for extra sunshine

May/June: water and feed your potato plants

Early June: harvest time!

If you do want to take it a step further - also ask for students to bring in garlic cloves, plant that and watch them grow. I even added a little magnifier so we can really see them growing!

Now you have a little meal, maybe you even grew some herbs to go along with it!

Put together a menu, a center piece and a reserved sign and students will feel like they're at a fancy restaurant!

Grow some kale and add kale chips to the menu!
