Gardening with your class.

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

I have been sharing about my school garden on instagram for quite some time now. Many teachers have reached out about wanting to start growing things with their students. Instagram has so many ways to share ideas but it is hard to organize them. I thought I would start this blog to help teachers organize some gardening activities in class.

I am not a writer or website creator so this will be a fun challenge!

Students LOVE gardening and it's such a hands on way to learn!

Students will learn so much through growing things even if they're just growing a little plant in the classroom!

If you do want to start a garden here are some things you might need:

- gloves ( I got mine from Costco)

- rakes and shovels

- a watering system - I have soaker hoses on a timer, I also have watering cans and a rain barrel ( purchased with money from my lavender fundraiser)!

What I grow each year:

- tomatoes

- red peppers

- peas

- pumpkins

- sunflowers

- potatoes

- garlic

What stays in my garden:

- mint

- rosemary

- kale

- lavender

- raspberries

-blueberries

-strawberries

Here is all about my garden in hopes that it will give you some ideas:

I have added a fence in front of my garden, this helps keep kids away at recess time! This was also a great project for students! We used First Nations colours and shapes!

The progress over the years:

This wasn't even the start! I started with lots and lots of overgrown weeds!

My mom and dad are also committed to teaching gardening so they have helped me a lot! My mom and I weeded, put fabric down and put gravel all around the garden. My dad even built a little wooden structure to keep the gravel in!

The garden is in a pretty sunny spot so before the lavender was giant we had to make some shade!

Everything has grown in and everything is beautiful, the upkeep is a lot easier than the start up!

Label making has been an on-going process!

Let me know if there is more you would like to know about gardening with students!
